Reading on a journey is the most therapeutic thing one can do while on transit. When you are a bibliophile, this is the most refreshing way to veer off from the world and get into the world of the writer of the book. There is no better feeling than having such a divergence tactic, doing what you love while relaxing on the road. This though can only happen if you are not the driver on the road trip, if you are, you can still read but only at pit stops. In essence, traveling while reading is like having two journeys concurrently; in one, you are on a vehicle and the other one, it is your mind that has taken a road trip.
There are lots of pieces of literature to choose from when you are looking for a perfect thing to read. It shouldn’t be necessarily a book. Here are some of the things to read while on the road
- Magazines
- Newspapers
- Journals
- Blogs
- News Websites
- Facebook stories
This list is exclusive of books, but a book is way better than any of those mentioned above. Before I give some of the books that are perfect take away when going for a long road. Here are a few of the reasons why books are preferential compared to any other piece of literature.
- Depending on your taste, a book can make you happier when you want. Bibliotherapy is the term that could use to describe the feeling of being made happy because of reading a book.
- Books’ storyline could resonate with the journey you’re taking which makes it an interesting escapade
- If non-fiction, say on travel, you will learn a lot from a book because a lot of research must have been carried out before coming up with an informative book
- Fictional humorous books will make you laugh throughout the journey
These are some of the books that should be on your packing list for you to read during a long road:
- The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
- Love With a Chance of Drowning written by Torre DeRoche
- The Caliph’s House: A Year in Casablanca by Tahir Shar
- The Lost City of Z written by David Grann
- On the Road by Jack Kerouac

The Alchemist
This is a book about going for what you want in life; being the go-getter that cannot be stopped by anything. The boy in the book goes ahead and follows his path to living his dream. The inspirational quotes therein give you a reason to have a meaningful life. I hope you love my taste, trust me, this book will be worth your while.
Love With a Chance of Drowning
This is one of the unputdownable travel love stories that have ever been written. One fun fact about it is that a travel blogger wrote it. Who knows, it could be a first-hand story told creatively. It is a memoir, so, my guess could be right that it is an account of his personal story.
The Caliph’s House: A Year in Casablanca
Shah is one of those writers that can capture your attention by simply how he puts his words. His Moroccan vacations inspire the book as a child. His relocation from England, in the book, was a way of making his children learn new tricks in a different setting. Once you start reading this, you will not look aside until you are done with it.
On the Road
This is one of the books that anyone traveling in a long distance for the first time should consider buying. The writer gives his account which resonates with any traveler and would be a good book for you on a long road.
The Lost City of Z
This is a story that is a merger of a biography and a travelogue. A tale told by a South American Explorer will keep you yearning for more. If there is a thirst for curiosity, this story could quench your thirst at the turn of every new page.
A Thousand Splendid Suns
Khaled is such a brilliant writer. The title of the book itself is a page turner, somewhat inspirational, but worth it. You should try it out the next time you decide on what to read during a long road.
These are but some of the books that can keep you glue to them while on a road trip. There are others that have been recommended can also give you a reason not to have a boring road trip. I hope you make the best choice while at it.
